Max Community Club
2011 Annual Letter
Another year has passed, and the members of the Max Community Club have been very busy. As many of you noticed during our annual Fun Day, the Max History Museum has now been installed in the old Max Methodist / People’s Church building. The little church building was cleaned up, and several items were donated for display. Among the items donated was an 1890’s parlor pump organ, that called Max home for many years, until being sold in the 1940’s. Other items that can now be found in the museum are a collection of old Max school yearbooks, an old Max Pirates Cheer Leader uniform, and several other antiques and Max history memorabilia.
In December, the Community Club hosted a soup supper to welcome those who have recently moved into Max. It was well attended, and a good time was had by all. In September, the club held the annual Fun Day. In a change from previous years, beef was served instead of pork, and it seemed to be a big hit among those who attended. The children (and some adults) took advantage of the great games being held, and we had several wonderful musicians who were there to keep everyone entertained. All in all, with all the good food, good entertainment, and good friends, it was a memorably good time. If you missed it, be sure to make plans to attend in the future!
In July, the club held its annual Flea Market, which had a fairly good turnout, and as usual, the club provided some great food for those who attended. The club was also able to install some new screen doors and storm windows on the club house. The old basketball court was removed in 2011, and replaced by a brand new concrete court, and new concrete was also poured under one of the covered picnic shelters as well.
The annual Max Clean Up Day was held in April, and the Community Club was pleased to have been able to help out several Max residents with the removal of trees, tree limbs, and even an old shed. The Annual Alumni Brunch was held in May, and it too was a success.
In November, the Community Club hosted a town meeting to discuss the future of the Max Post Office (which is on the list possible post office closures). Attendance was very good, and two officials of the Postal Service were there to answer questions (and a good many questions were asked!). Although we have yet to hear back from the Postal Service as to the fate of the Max Post Office (which has been active since 1880), we are all hopeful that it will escape the Postal Service Gallows.
In April, Ralph Boon held a farm equipment auction in the field next to the park and club house, and the Community Club was opened and we were able to offer some great barbecue and drinks for those who attended Ralph’s auction. An added bonus for the club was the sprayer that the club was able to bid on and win. The sprayer will be used to help keep the weeds and stickers down in the park.
Also in 2011, the Max Community Club was the grateful recipient of several fire extinguishers and an AED machine. These have all been installed in the club house. We are all hopeful that they will never have to be used, and we are thankful that we have them should the need ever arise. The Max Community Club is also now on the World Wide Web! We now have an internet weblog (blog), where we hope to make community announcements available to any who may have internet access, and a town website is also currently under construction. As soon as it is up and running, a notice will appear in the club blog. The internet address for the community club blog is http://themaxcommunityclub.blogspot.com/
The club faced increases in both our insurance rates and the cost of electricity to keep the town street lights lit. There is a very real possibility that the community club may not be able to continue paying for the street lights without help from those in town that benefit from them. We realize that times are tough, and we are all doing our best to stretch each and every dollar, however, we would appreciate it very much if those who do not help with the street light fund, would please do so this year.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Max Community Club, please feel free to talk with any of the club officers (Cindy Cawthra – President; Bob Tuttle – Vice-President; Margaret Smith – Treasurer; or Shary Jones – Secretary). Our monthly meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, and are open to any who would like to visit and see what goes on. Although voting is reserved to club members only, visitors are always welcome. We look forward to serving the town of Max throughout 2012 (and beyond), and look to see you at our meetings!
Best Regards,
The Max Community Club
