Donna Lee Perkins
Donna Lee Perkins was born April 23, 1937 in Denver, Colorado to Harold and Thelma (Beavers) Mikelson. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Jack and Ella Beavers. Donna attended school through the 10th grade when she married her sweetheart, Harold L. Perkins on December 21, 1952 in Denver, Colorado. The couple made their home in several Colorado cities and towns, including Colorado Springs, Silverthorn, Parker, and many others. They eventually settled on the Perkins family farm at Bennett, Colorado. After their retirement, they became “snowbirds,” spending many winters in Arizona. In 1998 they moved to Max, Nebraska.
While living in Max, Donna was a member of both the Max Community Club (where she served as the club secretary), and the Max Happy Red Hatters (which she helped introduce to the community). Donna had a warm and loving heart, and was always ready and willing to offer a quick smile, lend a helping hand, or an understanding and sympathetic ear whenever it was needed; and she was well known for taking on the role of mom and grandma for many young people she met and befriended over the years. She was well loved and respected by all who knew her. A memorial bench erected in her honor is on display in the Max Community Museum.
Donna passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. She was 73.
Donna was survived by Harold “Perk” Perkins, her husband of 58 years; their daughter Debbie (and Barry) Fendel of Aurora, Colorado; her sons Harold Wayne Perkins (of Denver, Colorado) and Ken Perkins (of Stratton, Nebraska); seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; her former daughter-in-law, Vikki Perkins; and scores of “adopted” children and friends who will (and do) miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one grandson, Jason Perkins.
